Hello from Tokyo. It has been a hot and humid summer in Tokyo. It was also hot and humid last year, when the Tokyo Olympics were held, and for that reason, the marathon venue was changed to Hokkaido, which is typically cooler than the capital. According to the Japan Weather Association, the average summer temperature in Japan is increasing at a rate of 1.16°C per 100 years. Indeed, compared to the early twentieth century, the annual number of extremely hot days (a daily temperature of 35°C or higher) has increased 3.3 times, and tropical nights (daily temperature of 25°C or higher) has increased 2.7 times.
How PR can save the world
Since I’ve mentioned the climate, I’d like to announce that IPRA has a relevant event. The webinar Climate Change: how PR can save the world will be moderated by IPRA secretary general Philip Sheppard in conversation with members of the IPRA climate change chapter on Thursday 8 September 2022 at 12.00 GMT/UCT (unadjusted). The discussion, with Daniel Silberhorn, Sophia Kudjordji and Svetlana Stavreva, will show how communications can make a positive impact, thereby playing our part in achieving UN sustainable development goal 13, Climate Action. Register here at Airmeet.
Bali Ha’i
I also take pleasure in announcing an upcoming event in November. IPRA has endorsed the International Public Relations Summit, an annual event held in Indonesia since 2012. This year’s summit will be held in Bali from 23 – ۲۵ November 2022 under the theme Shaping an impactful value creation in the world of the digital economy. I will be taking part with a video speech about sustainable business communication. The summit typically attracts around 200 participants from 20 countries in Asia Pacific including government officials, agencies, inhouse PR managers and educators. You can find more information about the summit at their website www.egabriefings.id.
I look forward to writing to you again in next month’s letter. Thank you.
Etsuko Tsugihara
IPRA President 2022
